Chalkbeat New York spoke to Next100 policy entrepreneur Alejandra Vázquez Baur about the New York City Department of Education’s new inter-agency plan, Project Open Arms, that aims to enroll and support school aged asylum seekers in New York City Schools.

Reema Amin of Chalkbeat New York wrote an article about the recent arrival of asylum-seeking families to New York Citymany include school-aged children. She spoke to Alejandra about the City’s Project Open Arms and the importance of centering student safety:

“We want kids to be in schools that can support them – schools that create a sense of safety for the child and for the family,” said Alejandra Vázquez Baur, an education policy expert who focuses on immigrant students for think tank Next 100. “That is critical for the child’s educational opportunities and also the child’s well being in the school.”
